Hidden gemmmmm. Food takes a while though and they don't speak English well, so keep that in mind. It's inside a supermarket, so you know it's legit. The steak torta is delicious and huge for its price. That thing can serve two people. And their soups are soooo good. The seafood soup is only available on weekends and it comes loaded with seafood.

We wanted to try some of the food in the taqueria earlier this week. La Confianza is Latin American supermarket that also has a meat market (carniceria), a small bakery (panaderia), and an ice cream store section. As soon as we walked in, R sniffed the air and said, "I smell menudo. I want some." We walked past the small panaderia area and, finding ourselves at the rear of the store where the taqueria was, we looked at all the food behind the glass in the kitchen area: chicharron, whole roasted chicken, pupusas, cooked beans and rice. There were other sections opening up to the dining area side, and these had toppings - radish, cucumber, beet, jalapeño, mix of cilantro and onion, lime wedges, and three different hot sauces - that customers could self-load onto their taqueria food purchases. R ended up getting a bowl of menudo with some tortillas, and I ordered a half of the rotisserie chicken and three tacos (two al pastor and one carnitas) made with homemade corn tortillas. We sat down at one of the booths that are in the dining area, which I think is pretty large for being in a supermercado that has so many different sections. One of the employees brought the food out to us. R liked his menudo, although it didn't have hominy in it, which is how he prefers it. It came in a huge bow, and was packed with meat and tripe. I sampled a little bit, and I thought the soup was on the salty side. My tree tacos were good. The size of the al pastor meat was inconsistent. On one of the two al pastor tacos, there were big and thick cubes of meat, which made it kind of tough, and the cubes of al pastor were smaller and more tender. The al pastor meat had good flavor; I could tell that the meat was marinated and had a hint of pineapple. The carnitas were good also. It's just that they didn't have a bold flavor that I like. I dressed all of the tacos with the complimentary onion and cilantro mix and the hot red sauce. The half of a rotisserie chicken had a light citrusy marinade on the outside. The chicken was a little dry due to being overcooked. In our future visits here (because we just HAVE to try some of the other taqueria menu items!) we plan on trying the ice cream and the different combinations of ice cream, fruits and other toppings as only the Latin Americans can mix up. Before we left, I scoped out the meat department. Most of the items looked very fresh, but I thought the price points were a tad on the high side.

The absolute best authentic tacos around! Super kind staff and absolutely delicious food. I would recommend this place to anyone!

That was a pleasant surprise. On a whim, I decided to check this place out for lunch. More than a carniceria, this location is also a taqueria and paletería. Two hard working ladies are behind the taqueria counter. Together they are hand-making and serving a variety of fresh dishes to a largely Spanish-speaking clientele. In fact, you might want to brush up on your Spanish before coming in. But as I was saying, they're making everything fresh, perhaps even from scratch. And the dishes range from tacos to burritos to caldo de rez, chicken dishes, tlayuda, and other savory delicacies. I had a couple of steak tacos and a queso pupusa. The steak tacos were perfect--an exercise in simplicity--steak, onions, a little cilantro. Give it a squirt of lime and maybe some of the red salsa (HOT!), and you have perfection. The pupusa was also very good. I am, however, still not sure how one is supposed to properly eat a pupusa. Mostly I just like saying the name. Say it with me: pupusa. See? Grab a beverage from the cooler in the back of the store. When you're done, take your ticket to the fellow at the front of the tienda. Be sure to check out the aforementioned carniceria. And maybe you'd like a scoop of ice cream for the ride home. Holler if you want some company.

Nice Carniceria! Smaller than Chicago market down the street but the selection is plentiful. Bought some pork chops and some marinated meats for tacos here. Friendly cashier.
